Wonder What Kind of Environment Germs grow best in? Try this Experiment with Yeast that Shows how Germs Grow

Bacteria1Kids, you know what an unclean kitchen looks like. But do you know what germs are? Do you know what germs look like? In this kitchen experiment that teaches about germs you will learn all about germs.

Germs are microscopic organisms that are so tiny you can’t see them without a special high powered microscope. There are good germs and bad germs. The bad germs can make you really sick. If you don't properly clean your kitchen or your house germs will overgrow and make you sick. You've probably been sick before. Have you ever wondered what was going on inside your body to make you feel so bad? Well, it is often due to a germ. Look at the picture of bacteria on the right. This drawing of bacteria is an example of what you might see with a microscope.

We need to learn about germs to protect us when we work with food.

So today we are going to do an experiment with yeast, which is one type of germ. Yeast are a kind of fungus so they are in the fungi category. Our experiment will show you which environment germs like the best and grow the fastest in.

Our germ growth experiment will need special equipment:

  • 3 bowls
  • 3 packets of Red Star Yeast
  • 3 Tablespoons of sugar
  • 3 forks or spoons for mixing
  • ice or icy cold water
  • boiling water (in thermos or fresh from hot kettle)
  • water at room temperature
