Make a Mini Paper Basket Craft and use it to Hold Your Mini Cupcakes!

cilieauthorThis mini paper basket craft activity for kids is a fun spring project for our cooking club curriculum. You can make this cupcake basket craft for carrying your mini spicy cupcake recipe or for whatever snack you'd like. This paper basket project is pretty quick to make. Do you like them? Kids, you can decorate your baskets with holiday stickers, or by drawing with on them with crayons or markers. Don't just leave them plain white like the one pictured above. Be super creative. Add shamrocks for St. Paddy's day, or color them with orange Jack-O-Lanterns for Halloween. They also look great as a plain basket, too with colored card stock paper. These cute but sturdy containers are a little bigger than the common pleated paper souffle portion cups you might find at a fast food restaurant. You know the kind? They are the ones that hold ketchup. (They are only 2 oz. in size). The pleated paper souffle portion cups you will need are the 4 oz kind. You can find them at party stores and online too.

Directions for mini paper basket craft:

  • Before meeting with the kids, Cut 8 strips of card stock paper (one inch thick and 8 1/2 inch long) from a sheet of card stock.
  • Cut an additional 8 strips of 8 1/2 inch long strips that are about 1/4 inch thick. (These are the handles.)
  • Ask the kids to fold their strips in half longways.
  • With a partner, the kids need to lay their folded strip down around the perimeter of the cup. When they get it around the circle one of the children needs to staple it to the cup while the other one helps hold it into place.
  • The last step is stapling the handle onto the candy cup.

For Teachers and Parents:

When planning your food container mini paper basket craft, please consider that candy cups are much sturdier than regular cupcake papers. Pleated paper souffle portion cups are inexpensive and can be found at your local party store and even online too. Sous club's can make their mini paper basket craft out of different colored pleated paper cups. If you'd like to get more crafty and holiday festive, just let the kids add stickers or writing on their cups.
